The Board, Faculty, TLC History, Internships
I was hired as the Executive Director in August 2009 and was honored to be the first non-lawyer to graduate from TLC with my classmates in the September class of ’09. I am a Wyoming native, born and raised in Cheyenne, with my own home in Jackson. I spend as much of my summer months as I can living in a log cabin in the Wind River Mountains that was built in 1917 and still has no electricity. It keeps me grounded and reminds me of my roots. In my career, I have been privileged to serve as a U. S. Senate Legislative Assistant for Wyoming Senator Alan K. Simpson and later as a Presidential Appointee to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Before joining the TLC tribe, I worked for a number of years as a political strategist and advocate for private property owners and injured oil field workers. I now look forward to applying the TLC methods in my work for the College as well as in my personal life. I am an avid reader, a world traveler, a fierce Scrabble player, a hiker extraordinaire, a lousy fly-fisherman, a lover of animals especially my pet rabbits, a good sister, a good aunt and a good daughter.
Registrations, CLE, Scholarships
I grew up in Georgia and South Carolina, and have degrees in Marine Biology and Library & Information Science. I have family ties to Wyoming, and have enjoyed many new experiences in the ‘Wild West’ since moving here in 1996. Instead of a ‘bucket list’, I have a "Life List" of things to try and places to go, including to run at least a mile in all 50 states. Two of the most fun and challenging races I’ve done were to run the Bolder Boulder 10K, and the Peachtree Road Race 10K.
I enjoy listening to a variety of music (Jimmy Buffett, Lyle Lovett, Grace Potter, James McMurtry and John Prine are some favorites), knitting and quilting, and traveling. The highlight of my life is spending time with my husband, our dachshunds, and our families. My husband loves to fish, and I enjoy visiting some of the scenic and wonderful places where he searches for trout and tarpon. I enjoy being a part of the TLC tribe, and it is my honor to get to know the students in their journey with TLC.
Financial Officer & Office Manager
Accounts Payable & Receivable, General Questions
For those of you that I have not yet met, my name is Lori (not to be confused with Laurie) Schmidt. I and my husband Mike moved west to Wyoming from Iowa in 2008 and feel fortunate to live in a beautiful, High-Plains neighborhood with great neighbors, west of Cheyenne. I have enjoyed working as part of the TLC staff since 2011 as both the Financial Officer and Office Manager but wear other hats for the college during Ranch and Regional events. Prior to TLC I worked as a Bank Officer with Security First Bank in Cheyenne and before that with State Farm Bank in Algona, Iowa.
Somehow I seem to do good with numbers but I feel the most comfortable and happy when working with and helping others, including co-workers, faculty and students. If you’ve had the opportunity to be at the Ranch while I was there helping out, you’ve likely seen me out jogging or hiking. I also enjoy winter activities such as snowshoeing and skate-skiing and in the summer Mike and I enjoy motorcycling. My husband and I have two grown children that we wish we could spend more time with.
Alumni Relations & Ranch Chef
Alumni Support, Local Working Groups, Referrals
I am fortunate to spend my summers on the Thunderhead Ranch, making sure all our students and faculty are well-fed and ready to meet the challenges of their day!
In the fall and winter, I join Nancy and Lori in the office, with my dachshund Wally by my side. I enjoy working with our students and alumni, helping them learn and grow with the TLC methods.
In my off time, I like to hike and explore new places, travel to exciting locations, and spend time relaxing at home.
